A preview of each chapter
The single most important thing to get right in each — the full chapter goes further, but this is the core of it.
Wildfire
Don't wait for an official evacuation order if smoke and wind direction already tell you to go. Know your route before you need it.
Flood
Never drive or walk through moving water. Get to higher ground and stay there — most flood deaths happen while people are trying to move.
Earthquake
Drop, cover, and hold on — under something sturdy, away from windows. Most injuries come from falling objects, not the shaking itself.
Winter storm / power outage
Assume the power stays out longer than forecast. Never run a generator or grill indoors — carbon monoxide kills faster than the cold does.
AI, scams, hacking, deep fakes, deep web
One example: AI voice cloning. Agree on a family safe word. If a call sounds exactly like a loved one in crisis asking for money, hang up and call back on the number you already have.
