Debian

One of the oldest and most established Linux distributions, built around stability and a conservative release cycle.

Debian has been around since 1993, and a lot of the rest of the Linux ecosystem is built on top of it — Ubuntu and its many derivatives all trace back to Debian. It’s maintained entirely by a volunteer community rather than a single company, which shapes how it’s run.

What tends to matter for a general-purpose refurbished machine:

It’s a solid, unglamorous default — not the newest packages, not a flashy interface, just a system that’s been doing the same job reliably for three decades.
