The first shake often isn't the last — expect aftershocks

Relaxing right after the shaking stops is one of the more dangerous moments in an earthquake. Aftershocks can arrive minutes, hours, or days later, and a building already cracked or weakened by the main quake can come down in one that would otherwise be minor. Stay alert and ready to drop, cover, and hold on again for at least the first day or two, and be extra cautious re-entering any structure with visible new damage until it's been checked.
