Once the shaking stops, resist the urge to go straight back inside. Smell for gas before you flip any light switch or use anything that sparks, and look for visible cracks in walls, chimneys, or the foundation before deciding it's safe to re-enter — most earthquake injuries and fires happen in the aftermath, from a leak or a compromised structure, not from the shaking itself.
