Protect outdoor animals from an early cold snap too, not just plants and pipes

An early frost catches outdoor animals the same way it catches an unharvested garden — pets left out overnight, poultry without a heat source, or livestock without adequate shelter or unfrozen water can all be hurt by a cold snap nobody had prepared for yet. Before the season's first hard freeze, check that water sources won't ice over completely, that shelters actually block wind, and that anything sensitive has somewhere warmer to be — the same early-warning habit that protects your garden works just as well applied to animals.
