"I overpaid you by accident" is almost always a scam

Common in online marketplace sales and rental deposits: a buyer sends a check or transfer for more than agreed, then asks you to refund the difference. The original payment looks real at first — it can even show as "cleared" briefly — then bounces or gets reversed days later, after you've already sent back real money from your own account. Never refund an overpayment directly; if it's genuine, ask the sender to cancel and resend the correct amount instead, and wait for a payment to fully, irreversibly settle before treating it as real.
