Hang up on unsolicited tech-support calls or pop-ups claiming infection

A phone call claiming to be from "Microsoft" or your antivirus provider, or a browser pop-up with a loud alarm sound and a support number claiming your computer is infected, is a scam nearly every time — real security software doesn't ask you to call a number and give a stranger remote control of your computer. The goal is either to get you to pay for fake "cleanup," or to actually get remote access and steal from accounts you're logged into. Close the browser (or force-quit it if it won't close), and never call a number that appeared in a pop-up or an unsolicited call.
