Handing your real card number to every small shop, trial subscription, or one-off online purchase means a breach at any of them exposes the same number tied to everything else you use it for. Many banks and card providers now offer virtual or masked card numbers — a disposable number that forwards charges to your real card but can be frozen or deleted individually if it ever leaks, without touching your actual account. Use one for anything you don't fully trust yet, especially free trials that require a card up front.
